3 Seater Sofas & Lounges

A 3 seater usually sits on the longest wall or floats in an open-plan room. Mark out its footprint with masking tape and live with it for a day. Aim for a clear path of roughly 75cm to 90cm where people walk, and keep the coffee table within easy reach, about 40cm to 45cm from the seat edge. 

Curved and chaise designs take more floor than their width suggests, so measure depth at the deepest point. Then check the route in: the narrowest doorway, tight hallway turns and the lift if you live in an apartment. Modular sofas are built in sections, which can help with an awkward entry.

A chaise extends one end into a footrest, which suits a household where someone likes to lie back. Confirm which side it sits on so the long end faces away from your main walkway. 

A sofa bed can turn the living room into a guest space. Leave clear floor in front of it, because the bed extends forward when it opens. 

Pick a rug at least as wide as the sofa so all the front legs sit on it. A larger rug that also runs under the coffee table defines the seating area in an open-plan room. A coffee table around 120cm to 140cm long keeps drinks within reach of all three seats, and a side table at the open arm takes a lamp. 

Watching a screen? Centre the middle seat on your TV unit so nobody watches at an angle.
